What is USPL?

Why did we found USPL?
The cold regions occupy nearly two-thirds of China’s land area, and nearly 70% of the world is also in cold regions. About 600 million people live in the cold regions, so they are important areas that can not be ignored in China and even in the whole world. Different from warm and humid areas, the ecological practices of cities in cold regions are faced with three unique disasters of drought, flood and frost. Their green infrastructure can not give play to ecological efficiency for more than half a year. Due to the fact that most of them are in underdeveloped areas, the attention paid to scientific research is relatively weak. Therefore, it is urgent to carry out the research on ecological wisdom and ecological practice of cities in cold regions from the perspective of spatial performance.
With the joint funding of the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Education, Jilin Jianzhu University, as the only university specialized in architecture in the severe cold region of Northern China, established the first spatial performance laboratory in Northern China on December 20, 2017, which was led by the Department of Urban and Rural Planning (the first discipline in China to establish the characteristic direction of “urban and rural planning under the guidance of ecological wisdom”), aiming to provide more professional technical support, more scientific risk prediction and more accurate decision support for the study of ecological wisdom and ecological practice of cities in cold region.
What are the core competences of USPL?
The first core competence is “dynamic monitoring and collection of spatial data”.
USPL possesses many kinds of world-class equipment imported from all over the world, and masters the urban spatial data collection and objective evaluation methods of multiple dimensions, such as wind, light, sound, heat and crowd vitality as well as the social survey and subjective evaluation methods like Contingent Valuation Method and Public Life Tools, to provide all-round data support for the cold northern regions.
The second core competence is “multi-dimensional construction and simulation of spatial model”.
USPL cooperates with Virtual Laboratory of Urban Space Information and Full-life Visual Simulation Laboratory of Green Building of Jilin Jianzhu University to build the dynamic visual analysis models and carry on simulation of wind, light, sound, and heat, etc according to the unique climate conditions of cities in cold regions, so as to help form a large number of influential scientific research results.
The third core competence is “multi-objective and visual evaluation of spatial performance”.
USPL takes the practices of ecological wisdom in cities and towns as typical samples and uses a variety of technical means to evaluate the environmental, social and economic performance and provide decision-making support for urban planning of ecological wisdom; USPL constructs an assistant decision-making system of urban design management, builds a control box based on master planning indexes, and conducts visual evaluation and accuracy verification of plans for rigid control indexes such as land use nature, building height and sunshine, so as to improve the scientificity of planning and design.

Firstly, it has hosted a number of international and national research projects in the field of ecological wisdom, and explored the construction mode of ecological smart towns supported by traditional ecological wisdom;
Secondly, it has carried out many national and provincial planning and design projects based on international innovative ideas, and won many national and provincial awards;
Thirdly, it has cooperated with the local governments, leading international research institutions and world-class universities;
Fourthly, it has worked with scholars of “Thousand Talents Program” and Cheung Kong Scholars to build an international academic echelon and form a high-end professional think tank;
